Life Coaching : AIRY FAIRY NONSENSE OR Actually Worth Your Time?

When I first heard about life coaching, I’ll admit—I was skeptical. As an aid worker, I thought, "Life coaching? That’s just airy-fairy nonsense. I’m far too pragmatic for that." But once I truly understood what life coaching is all about, I realized it can be one of the most impactful tools in navigating the unique challenges aid workers face.

Time is precious when you’re working in the field, and to take time for yourself, you need to be sure that any investment you make is worth it. I’m not here to tell you that life coaching will solve all your problems, but I can show you how it can help you tackle the tough issues you’re facing.

I practice transformative coaching, which focuses on long-term change rather than quick fixes. The aim? To work myself out of a job by providing you with the tools and insight you need, so you don’t need a coach anymore. This approach aligns with the values we hold as aid workers—to empower others and ensure sustainable change.

What Can Life Coaching Help With?

The beauty of coaching is that you can bring just about anything to the table. Whether it’s work-related challenges—like team tensions, feeling overwhelmed, or struggling with a difficult project—or personal issues—such as dealing with burnout or navigating complicated home life during a humanitarian mission—life coaching offers space to process and strategize.

Perhaps your brain is overloaded, and you know something’s off but don’t know where to start. One of my strengths, developed through my own humanitarian experience, is the ability to cut through the chaos. I specialize in simplifying complex emotions and situations, helping you find clarity in what may feel like a jumbled mess.

What to Expect in a Session

Let’s say you’re feeling demotivated in your current post. During our session, we’ll first explore what you’re hoping to achieve. After that, I’ll listen, ask questions, and help you unpack the challenge. We may touch on your core values, try some creative exercises, and by the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of direction and the steps to take. It might take one session, or it might take several—it’s entirely up to you.

Why Coaching? And Why Me?

I’m not here to brag—I just love coaching. My approach is straightforward and empowering. Unlike traditional forms of therapy, life coaching is practical, forward-focused, and action-oriented. If you’re someone who prefers fast results and doesn’t want to dwell on the past, coaching could be just the right fit for you.

I choose to work with frontline workers because I know how challenging this field can be. I’ve been in your shoes and have faced the same struggles—whether in the field or dealing with the politics of HQ. I understand the stress, the responsibility, and the isolation.

The beauty of coaching is that you already have the answers—you just might need a little help unlocking them. Life coaching isn’t about me giving you advice or telling you what to do. It’s about guiding you to discover the best solutions for your own life. Ultimately, what works for you is what’s right for you—and no one can know that better than you.

Still Skeptical?

If you’re wondering whether life coaching is just airy-fairy nonsense, picture this: having the tools to tackle challenges head-on with concrete, sustainable actions and strategies that you’ve developed for yourself. Does that sound empowering? I think so.
