when the system fails you
In frontline work, a failure of the system is all too common and stark, with consequences often too hard to comprehend.
When you’re a frontline worker, you often give everything to support others—trusting that the system will support you in return.
But what happens when it doesn’t?
When resources are scarce, leadership is lacking, or policies prioritise efficiency over humanity, it can feel like the system you serve has let you down.
That betrayal can lead to frustration, moral injury, and a deep sense of disillusionment. You might start questioning your value, your role, or even your purpose.
It can feel incredibly isolating—like you're carrying the weight of a broken system on your shoulders, with no clear path forward.
Over time, this can erode your confidence, your passion, and your belief that change is possible.
So what can you do?
From my experience there are a couple of options:
FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CHANGE
You can't fight everything so pick your battles wisely.
Global politics and toxic institutional cultures are beyond your control.
Identify what you can change and prioritise that.
You will be surpised how much you can do if you manage your expectations.
2. CONSIDER MOVING ON
However hard it may seem at the time, sometimes leaving is the right decision.
Learn to recognise signs that you are not making a positive difference anymore.
It is not a 'cop-out'. Often, it is time to step aside and let someone else take over.
Choose something new that will reinvigorate you and give you the chance to shine.
